Re: Best GAMSAT Preparation Advice
What Is The Best GAMSAT Preparation Advice?
GAMSAT is known to be a very difficult exam and trust me when I say that thriving on last-minute cramming won’t do you any good. If you’re only months away from sitting the GAMSAT and you’re not sure where to start, then you should read some of the best preparation tips for Sections I, II and III that will help you get going and stay on track:
Best GAMSAT preparation advice for Section I: Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences
Keep in mind that GAMSAT questions in section I are more inclined to test your reasoning. The questions do not focus on your level of knowledge do not put a great deal of importance in memorising facts. You might need to start working on your comprehension skills since this section won’t give elementary-level texts. Reading old/classical novels and poetry will greatly help you in this area. In addition, you will also encounter some data and statistics-based questions which are vague and confusing if you’re not used to reading scientific articles. So, I highly suggest that you download scientific articles and read the results and discussion section.
It’s helpful to keep in mind that the GAMSAT is a time-pressured exam. It’s always a good idea for you to allot only a definite amount of time for each question as you will have an average of 1.3 minutes for each question. If you don’t know the answer by the time ends, then it is advisable to just skip to the next question. You should also try to replicate the environment and pressure that you will be in once you take the exam. You can try answering the GAMSAT past papers with a stopwatch (under timed conditions). By doing so, you’ll become familiarised with the conditions and become less nervous in the actual GAMSAT sitting.

Best GAMSAT preparation advice for Section II: Written Communication
In this section, you will be given exactly one (1) hour to write down two essays. ACER (the company that runs the exam) will provide 5 quotes for one essay (task A) and another 5 quotes for the second essay (task B). Students will then need to determine the common theme in each set of quotes in which to base their essay on. There is no better way to get around this section than to become familiarised with a wide variety of possible topics and to practice writing essays about these topics.
Some of the GAMSAT topics are covered in the follow post – Topics for Section 2 of the GAMSAT
It is very important that you know a little (or more) about everything. You should also commit to your memory the three significant things that you should watch out for when writing an essay: content, organisation and mechanics. Well-written essays can give you good marks and may compensate for your scores in the other sections. If you still have time after you finish constructing your essays, read and review it once again to assure that you don’t have any misspelled words or grammatically incorrect sentences!

Best GAMSAT preparation advice for Section 3: Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences
You’re background in science will come into play in this section. However, this won’t particularly require you to recall all of the facts that you learned during your college years. It is only crucial that you know how to apply certain scientific concepts in the given questions. Furthermore, the questions won’t give you the formulas that you’ll need to compute for the answer, so it’s imperative that you go back to memorising the basic formulas in physics.
For this section, remember that you only have 1.5 minutes for each question. And if you’re lost and don’t know the answer, it is better if you cross off at least two wrong answers. In this way, you can increase your probability of ‘guessing’ the correct answer.
The best GAMSAT preparation advice I can give is that by answering the GAMSAT practice papers and practising writing essays about significant topics, you are putting yourself in a position for success. Most improvements come from practice!
In this way, you’ll get to evaluate yourself and at the same time, know the topics you’re weak in. This will also give you an idea on how much study time you should allot for each subject.
And finally, here are some free questions for the GAMSAT below. Happy studying… and practising!
