This mock exam focuses on section 3 of the GAMSAT, which is the most important section with regards to weighting. Section 3 is weighted double, so students can really increase their overall GAMSAT score if they excel in this section.

You do not have to complete the questions in the order that they are given. You should complete the topics (biology, organic chemistry, general chemistry, and physics) you are best at first. For example, if organic chemistry is your strongest subject then go through the paper and complete all of the organic chemistry questions first. And leave the subject that is your weakest to the end. For example, if you struggle like many students to correctly answer the physics questions then leave these questions to the end. This is beneficial in two ways.

  1. If you complete the topics you are good at first then you will build up confidence for the actual exam. Confidence can really help you succeed in the GAMSAT.
  2. Many students run out of time in the GAMSAT and then are forced to guess the answers are the end. This is especially common with section 3. Therefore if you are forced to guess answers to questions that are your weakest points, this is a lot better than guessing answers to questions in which are your best topics.

So go ahead and attempt your GAMSAT preparation material PDF version and I wish you the best of success!

GAMSAT Chemistry Practice Questions

We will now go through 1 unit, which contains 3 GAMSAT biology questions.

GAMSAT Biology Questions

Unit 1

Questions 1-3

The visual pathway controls conscious visual perception in humans. Each eye views a monocular field (split into nasal, N, and temporal, T, fields), and together, they have a binocular visual field (left and right nasal fields) as shown in Figure 1.

GAMSAT Biology Questions

The optic tracts (shaded and clear nerve bundles), which connects the eyes to the visual cortex, are “split” into left and right optic nerves at the optic chiasm so that the left nasal field and right temporal field are “seen” in the left hemisphere and vice versa. Thus, when a person has lesions along the optic tracts, the resulting loss of vision will depend on where the lesion occurs. For example, lesion D in figure 2 (lesion in the left optic tract before it splits) will result in the loss of left nasal and right temporal vision. Use this information to answer the following questions that refer to Figure 2.

  1. Lesion B results in __________________.
    A. Complete blindness of the left eye

    B. Complete blindness of the right eye
    C. Complete blindness of both eyes
    D. Nothing
  2.  A person only has nasal vision. Which lesion best explains this?
    A. A
    B. B
    C. C
    D. D
  3.  What combination of lesions results in vision in the left temporal field only?
    A. B & E
    B. B & D
    C. B & C
    D. B & A

Before we get to the answers, if you would like to get access to 1000’s of the highest quality GAMSAT practice questions like these, then Click Here Now:

Scroll down for explanations to the GAMSAT Biology Questions.

GAMSAT Biology Questions

  1. Answer is B. Since both tracts that connect the right eye to the visual cortex are severed, the right eye will not be able to transmit anything, resulting in blindness of the right eye.
  2. Answer is C. Cutting the optic chiasm vertically (lesion C) severs the tracts that transmit the temporal visual fields. If you’ll notice, the tracts that “view” the nasal fields are still intact; thus, C is the correct answer.
  3. Answer is B. Lesions C and E result in a loss of left temporal vision, so choices A and C are incorrect. Lesion A & B together produce the same result as lesion B alone, which is blindness in the right eye. Thus, lesion B & D together leaves only the left temporal vision intact.

GAMSAT Section 2 Topics – Task A and Task B

gamsat-section-2-topics
From: Matthew

Re: GAMSAT Section 2 Topics

Many students email our team and ask ‘what are the common GAMSAT section 2 topics?’. So I am going to outline this in this post as there may be many more students with the same question.

Firstly, ACER does not provide a syllabus with the most common GAMSAT section 2 topics, so we can only guess/assume based on past years and intelligent research.

After some research our team has put together common GAMSAT section 2 topics that are likely to arise in task A and task B of the GAMSAT.

TASK A – GAMSAT Section 2 Topics

Task A is an argumentative essay and deals with sociocultural issues. Common GAMSAT section 2 topics for Task A include war, freedom, crime, science, technology, poverty, wealth, and punishment.

TASK B – GAMSAT Section 2 Topics

Task B is a personal essay and it should be written with feeling. The theme deals with social and personal issues. Common GAMSAT section 2 topics for Task B include love, friendship, originality, ageing, suffering, beauty, conformity, youth, humour.

Students can get a free series of quotes that relate to some of these common GAMSAT section 2 topics. Click below to download now.

FREE GAMSAT ESSAY QUESTIONS

We have also released a GAMSAT essay writing book. Click below to download your digital version now for free – this will teach you everything you need to know for Section 2 of the exam!

gamsat physics syllabus

Free GAMSAT Essay Book

So, just a reminder that students are given 60 minutes to complete two essays, so it is important to keep track of time and not spend too much time on one essay. Students are given 5 quotes that surround a common theme and they are required to respond to the overall theme that these quotes represent.

Students should aim to write an essay that is between 350-400 words in length. It is also important to include a title in your essay – try to be creative and make it stand out from the hundreds of other essays that the marker is going to read. If you are struggling to think of a title, a simple rhetorical question will do as a title. Try to focus on generating great ideas and planning out each essay before you actually begin writing. Ideas are more important than grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

How To Prepare For GAMSAT – All Three Sections!

From: Matthew

Re: How To Prepare For GAMSAT

Okay, so you want to know how to prepare for GAMSAT? Well, firstly the GAMSAT is a prerequisite test run by ACER for the admission into dental and medical schools in Australia, Ireland, and the UK.

There are 3 sections in the GAMSAT.

Section 1
This section is called Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences. Students are given 100 minutes to complete 75 multiple-choice questions.

Section 2
This is the Written Communication section.

Now we will get into the valuable content!

How to prepare for GAMSAT Section 1?

Section 1

For this section students should be familiar with the following types of texts as these are likely to come up in the exam – essays, poems, cartoons, dramas, editorials, graphs, figures, short stories, essays, letters, journals, and biographies. All of these types of stimulus material can be categorised into the following 4 categories:

1. Prose (in all diverse types)

2. Poetry (including Drama)

3. Social and/or Behavioural Sciences

4. Editorial Cartoon and/or Graphic Representations

An in-depth analysis of these different categories are covered in detail in The Humanities Bible.

The Humanities Bible provides over 75 questions and solutions for all of the categories.

Regular reading and practice are the most effective ways to prepare for this section. An e-book reader is a worthy investment. E-books can easily be downloaded through the Amazon store and unfamiliar words can easily be learnt via the inbuilt dictionary. This is a great way to improve your vocabulary through reading.

Suggested Readings

Some great readings that will help prepare you for the type of texts you will receive in Section I include:

  • The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Defying Hitler – Sebastian Haffner
  • English Passengers – Matthew Kneale
  • Oliver Twist – Charles Dickens
  • The Penguin Book of Twentieth Century Essays – Ian Hamilton
  • A Short History of Nearly Everything – Bill Bryson
  • The Story of My Life – Helen Keller
Vocabulary

Students should aim to improve their by utilising the tools on www.vocabulary.com. Students should practice questions from the MCAT word list.

Section-I-like questions can also be found on readtheory.org.

Our team has released a Full Length GAMSAT Practice Test, which is identical to the actual GAMSAT exam. Students should complete all of the Section I practice questions in this test. Students should then check all answers and go back and see where they went wrong. This is the most effective and fastest way to improve your score in Section I.

The 4 ACER booklets are also a must-have resource to practise your Section I comprehension skills.

How to prepare for GAMSAT Section 2?

Section 2

  • In the exam, students are to complete two essays – both Task A and Task B.
  • Essays should be at least 350 – 400 words.
  • Five quotes are provided for each essay task and all of the quotes surround a common theme.
  • Task A deals with socio-cultural issues and Task B deals with social and personal issues.
  • A title is recommended for each essay. Be creative! The markers are looking for the best ideas. Ideas are more important than spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • The best ideas get the best marks, so planning your essay in the first 5 minutes is the key to success.

When planning your essay, read the series of 5 quotes carefully and determine the overall theme. The theme is quite obvious. Some examples of themes include: freedom, crime, poverty, wealth, punishment, science, technology, love, friendship, humour, suffering, youth, beauty, ageing, conformity, originality.

How to prepare for GAMSAT S2 – Task A

Task A is an argumentative essay. Each paragraph should be planned out.

Paragraph 1: Introduction – explanation and interpretation of a chosen quote or standpoint you have concerning the overall theme.

Students should aim for three body paragraphs. They should be Thesis, Thesis, Antithesis (or Thesis, Antithesis, Antithesis).

A concluding paragraph should then sum up and reconcile between the Thesis’ and Antithesis. Common themes that students could expect in the GAMSAT Task A include:

  • Freedom
  • Crime
  • Poverty
  • Wealth
  • Punishment
  • Science
  • Technology

How to prepare for GAMSAT S2 – Task B

Task B is a personal essay. It should be written with feeling. Students need to be able to explain and visualise how other people may be feeling in different life situations.

The quotes that students receive have a personal theme, which allows students to relate the themes to their own experiences in life.

Paragraph 1: Acquaint the reader with the topic/theme and state your specific point of view.

There should be 3 body paragraphs. Each paragraph should focus on a different idea that supports your specific point of view.

A concluding paragraph should summarise the main points, then support the main view and end with a great impact on the reader.

Common topics that students can expect in the GAMSAT Task B:

  • Love
  • Friendship
  • Humour
  • Suffering
  • Youth
  • Beauty
  • Conformity
  • Originality
  • Ageing

How to prepare for GAMSAT Section 3?

Section 3

This section of the GAMSAT includes physics at year 12 level and biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry all at university level. The exam consists of 20% organic chemistry, 20% physics, 20% general chemistry, and 40% biology.

Candidates are required to use their knowledge and the understanding of concepts in order to answer questions. This section involves the analysis of tables, charts, scientific information, and graphs.

It is important that students practise questions under timed conditions. The ACER booklets are a great start for practice questions.

The AceGAMSAT team have released a ‘Full-Length GAMSAT Practice Test’ which contains 110 questions that are just like the real exam, so this is definitely a valuable resource.

If you want to know how to study for GAMSAT, then the following Section 3 topic list below is extremely valuable.

These refined topic points are covered in great detail in the respective AceGAMSAT study guides.

GAMSAT Sample Questions Free + Elimination Strategy

From: Matthew
Re: GAMSAT Sample Questions

Are you looking to get your hands on some GAMSAT Sample Questions? If so, then you have came to the right place.

The AceGAMSAT Team have put together a section 3 mock exam, which contains 55 GAMSAT sample questions. These questions are the closest thing to the real exam!

gamsat sample questions

It is highly recommended that you complete the test under timed conditions are this will allow you to adapt to the conditions in the real exam. Make sure you go through the fully worked solutions if you are unsure about any answers. We will now examine a strategy you can use to increase you GAMSAT score for the multiple choice sections.

The AceGAMSAT Elimination Strategy

Over the years our team has developed a range of strategies that can help you think critically about the question and answer choices in the GAMSAT. These strategies should be used when all else fails so you can eliminate some answer choices and make your best educated guess.

These strategies are obviously used for Section I and Section III of the GAMSAT.

The first step is to make sure you fully understand what the question is asking (by practising GAMSAT sample questions you will continually improve). It may sometimes be easier to rephrase the question into a statement, or a simpler question.

Once you fully understand what the question is asking then you can start eliminating any answer choices that could not possibly be correct. (Note: If you are unsure or any questions when attempting the GAMSAT sample questions, then try this method).

Then begin by re-reading the remaining answers and ask yourself the following questions.

  • Does the answer choice respond to the question being asked? If not, eliminate it! Even if it may be a true statement it may not be the answer to the question that is being asked. This is where many students go wrong. They pick an answer because it is true, however it does not answer the question! If it does, however, respond to the question being asked, keep it as an option as it may be correct.
  • Do the answer choices contain words like none, all, absolutely, always, or never? The majority of answer choices that contain these words are incorrect. This is because the ideas in the answer choices are usually open to interpretation, and cannot be expressed in such absolute terms as never or always. Instead look for options that use conditional words such as usually, often, rarely, some, or most. This technique alone has helped many of our students dramatically improve their scores.
  • Does the answer choice express an extreme view of the information from the passage? This extreme view can either be positive or negative. If so, re-read it carefully to see if it is actually answering the question or if it is just an extreme summary of the information from the passage.
  • Does the answer choice use the exact same language as the author in the stimulus/passage, but change the meaning of what is being said? If this is the case, this answer choice is a misleading option and has most likely been put there to trick you into choosing the wrong answer. This answer choice can then be eliminated. If not, keep it as an option as it may still be the correct answer.

Now keep these in mind while you are attempting the GAMSAT sample questions and see if you can quickly cross of any multiple choice answers!
