Preparation is highly individual. What works for one person will not work for another. I have worked with some students who received entrance to Melbourne University following a 15 mark jump in their score, and this was from them starting to prepare in January for the March GAMSAT.

Other students have started out strong in November and December, only to be distracted by Christmas and Summer fun and holidays, to return in February to serious GAMSAT preparation.

I would say for about 50% of these individuals they experienced sizable improvements, the other 50% were not so fortunate. Others still have prepared gradually in November/December, then increased the intensity of their preparation through the first three months of the year, and received stellar results. On balance, I would say the best preparation is no less than four months, with at least 12-20 hours a week dedicated to your revision, trouble-shooting and learning new concepts. 

An important piece of advice I would give which will help you to determine what exactly is best for you would be the following: overprepare. One thing I’ve learned about GAMSAT preparation is that you cannot “game” the GAMSAT.  You never know what will appear, so be sure to prepare for everything.

Years ago, I sat a GAMSAT course with a preparatory organization I will not name. Needless to say, it was a major one of its time. During the course we were assured there would be “five questions on Mendel’s Laws”, “three on Tautomerism” and so forth, none of which turned out to be accurate. 

The Lesson: preparing for everything, not rationalizing in your preparation is the way to guarantee success. So, to determine how long it will take you to prepare for the exam, we recommend utilising the resources of ACE GAMSAT and then determining how long it will take to work through all the possible topics and practice questions provided in the material.

Factoring in the need for constant revision, I doubt you will find your full revision can be completed in anything less than 3 months. So, get started as soon as possible!
