GAMSAT Essay Structure For Success!

GAMSAT Essay Structure
From: AceGAMSAT
Re: GAMSAT Essay Structure For Success!

While many students inquire about the topics, the GAMSAT Essay Structure is equally important. The GAMSAT Essay Structure concerns organisation of your ideas into a suitable form and framework. The structure of the essay should be complete, in itself, the parts of the essay should be in agreement with each other and the progression of ideas should be clear and coherent. Seems a no-brainer? These principles are quite old – derived from Plato, Aristotle, & St. Thomas of Aquinas! Integritas, consonantia, and claritas – wholeness, harmony, & clarity. These principles are adapted in several ways by many teaching essay structure; yet with other variations.

FREE GAMSAT ESSAY QUESTIONS

Teaching the GAMSAT Essay Structure, many will adopt the THESIS-ANTITHESIS-SYNTHESIS (TAS model), especially for Task A. One can think of this as the BODY of the essay with each given a paragraph or two. The Thesis is your topic, the Antithesis concerns opposing viewpoints, and the Synthesis, ideally, is the conclusion which takes both your Thesis and Antithesis into account. Task B of the GAMSAT Essay Structure is less restrictive, where personal narratives and style are the major constituents. Both should have 3 – 4 well-developed paragraphs. In addition – key suggestions are to create a great opening statement which intrigues the audience and captivates interest (attention-getting device) and a solid concluding statement which wraps things up, and if possible, ties back into the original first statement. Markers love this because it suggests a prima facia quality where the essay is airtight!

There is an old saying in Speech courses to (1) Tell the Audience What You are Going to Tell Them, (2) Tell Them and (3) Tell them again! Although, this seems overly repetitive – (1) and (3) serve as overviews or signposts and function as a pneumonic device. Also helping message retention and audience interest are transitions which connect paragraphs together. A simple example would be: Now, that we have adequately covered Point 1 of the Proposition, let us examine Point 2.

A Sample Template for the GAMSAT Essay Structure (especially Task A) would resemble something like this:

Introduction Attention-Getting Device

– State the Relevance of the Topic – Why is this Important?
– How does this affect the audience?
– Thesis Statement
– Overview of Points to Cover

Body of the Essay

Point 1
– Evidence and Support
– Transition to Point 2

Point 2
– Evidence and Support
– Transition to Point 3

Point 3 – Antithesis
– Evidence and Support
– Commentary on Opposing Viewpoints
– Transition to Conclusion

Conclusion – Synthesis
– Brings about the larger social implications of the topic
– Heightens the complexity of the issue
– Final Statement – Ties Back Into Introduction

This GAMSAT Essay Structure Template can also be used as a cheat sheet for your timed essay in order to jot down notes and organise your response. Even though Task B of the GAMSAT tends to be more lyrical this template can be used to brainstorm possible topics and approaches. Keep in mind that the GAMSAT Essay Responses are to a given extent marked analogically (in relation to the other writers you are in competition with), yet this template will serve as a useful device for brainstorming, creation of the message and polishing up your response.

Re: GAMSAT Essay Topics

GAMSAT essay topics are usually abstractions taking the form of a famous quote, controversial statement or witty idea. As you most likely know:

Task A of the GAMSAT essay topics is most likely contentious, argumentative and critical which asks you to write for or against the proposition.

Task B of the GAMSAT essay topics is most likely more abstract, reflective, expressive, even poetic in its proposed contemplation and response. Since Task A is most likely political, it is best to be well-read in current global events. Since Task B is most likely reflective it is best to be well-read in aesthetics and literature.

Since you are given a number of quotations for either task, one can respond either directly to one quote, to the general implied idea behind the quotes, or use the quote as a theme to respond to. In a Task A marking, the highest standards are most likely evidence and support to back up claims made in the essay. In Task B markings, the highest standards usually revolve around an experiential evaluation based in style. This dichotomy is somewhat arbitrary when both standards work in conjunction for both essays.

Examples of GAMSAT essay topics could be almost anything; so a wonderful source for practice and study is a book of quotations or a list of quotes found online. In addition, higher-grade periodicals, such as The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, et. al. can help immensely! These periodicals cover current events well, have a strong op-ed section, as well as showcase artistic pursuits.

Of course, the best practice in preparing for the GAMSAT essay topics is to actually write. Choose some common universal themes (Friendship, Love, Suffering, etc.) in a book of quotations and respond in writing. Read up on current controversial topics (politics, social injustices, etc.) and formulate a response. Share these with friends for feedback or post on your favourite online forums to generate responses.

Quick Tips For Writing Your GAMSAT Essay

1. It is highly recommended that students write about these GAMSAT Essay Topics. Students should find quotes that relate to these themes and write as many essays as possible. When students are in the actual exam they will already have so many examples in mind for each theme to back up their essays – This will greatly improve their timing in the essay!

2. Students should write practice essays for each of these themes and have them looked at by a professional or a friend who has gone exceptionally well in the GAMSAT

3. When practicing essay writing students should work under timed conditions and try to simulate the actual exam environment as much as possible. Find a quiet place and sit down at a desk. Students need to actually write the essays out on lined paper – just like they will need to do in the actual GAMSAT exam. This is also beneficial as it will train the writing muscles to cope with 1 hour of continuous writing in section 2.

Also, a great book that covers many GAMSAT essay topics is called ‘The Meaning Of Things’ by AC Grayling.

Finally, a word of advice, think of your writings not as practice, but as rehearsal. By rehearsing each day, you will develop the optimism in your responses to Ace the GAMSAT!

GAMSAT Written Communication – Essential Considerations

GAMSAT Written CommunicationFrom: Matthew
Re: GAMSAT Written Communication – Essential Considerations

According to legend, Cicero was asked what the three most important things were in delivering his message. The legendary rhetorician reportedly stated: Audience! Audience! Audience! To a large extent, this is true for the GAMSAT Written Communication for Section 2 of the GAMSAT. In essence, all the other parameters for judging your essay are based, at least to some extent, on what the New Critic Wayne C. Booth had called “The Fictive Audience.”

In the GAMSAT Written Communication section, we write to a large extent to the idea that the message will be received by someone – in our case, the quintessential GAMSAT essay marker. Think of the criteria for judgment usually used in essay markings: Content, Expression, Structure, Organisation, Evidence, Style, and so on. The basic fact is these parameters for evaluation are all adapted, when writing, to a sense of how the marker will evaluate these factors. In fact, we know, after writing the task out, that some of the areas were either fulfilled or lacking.

Whether it is Task A or Task B of the GAMSAT Written Communication, in the forefront of our writing, we have the notion of how the task will be evaluated. Therefore, the idea of a “fictive audience” becomes a primary concern. We ask ourselves questions before, during and after writing the task out such as:

1 – Was the essay clear enough?

2 – Did the essay have solid organisation?

3 – Was there enough support and evidence to support the claims made?

4 – Was the style of writing suited for the message?

5 – Did the essay keep the attention of the audience (marker)?

These considerations, of course, presuppose an audience, which in our case, is the essay marker. These are just a few notions to take into account when practicing for the GAMSAT Written Communication section. Other essential considerations will be released in our book – The Advanced Essay Bible, concerning the GAMSAT writing tasks, which will be released in the near future.

GAMSAT Section 1 Tips For Success

GAMSAT Section 1 Tips

From: Matthew
Re: GAMSAT Section 1 Tips For Success

Recently I was asked what are a few essential GAMSAT Section 1 Tips.

I joked that one should camp in a library for 5 years studying prose, poetry, the behavioural and social sciences, humanities in general and apply these to all sorts of cartoons. Seems to me this is a foolproof way to successfully study for the Gamsat Section 1. Yet, none of us have the time for such a quixotic venture given the time for study many of us have at our disposal. The fact of the matter is one can be successful if one takes a few shortcuts. To this end, I have compiled some very practical tips GAMSAT Section 1 success.

Tip 1 – Read as Much as Possible – a few shortcuts can be found in anthologies, academic journals, books of quotations, as well as the higher grade op-eds in the New York Times, the Atlantic, and other periodicals.   Actually, Rolling Stone (online) has some very good writers. Reading activities will also help with Section 2, as well.

Tip 2 – Understand the Language – take the time to read glossaries of literary terms, psychological terms, sociological and philosophical terms. Each discipline has its own lexicon or terminology – some of these terms may be used in Section 1 of the Gamsat. (The French philosopher Michel Foucault called the terminology of the social sciences “Monster Slang”!) Understanding the movements, the terminology will help when one encounters a term such as “Neo-Platonism” or “Subjective Idealism.”

Tip 3 – Utilise A Methodology in Reading Who/Whom is doing what, where, when, why and how? I tend to think Kenneth Burke’s “Dramatism” is an essential tool to getting down to the basics of what a passage or graphic implies. This type of reading is the old journalism school of taking notes in order to write up a story – it is quite functional.

Tip 4 Know Critical Theory on occasion, one will need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of a given theory or claim. It is helpful to review logical fallacies, as well as what constitutes a solid argument or theory.

Tip 5 – Study take the time to do all the above on a daily basis. It can be an hour or two a day on a daily basis. Keep a journal and write each day on your readings. You will find your knowledge expanding on a daily basis.

Tip 6 – Practice – Out of all the GAMSAT Section 1 Tips this would be the most important, as practice will improve your GAMSAT score in the least amount of time. Practicing several questions every day is the key to success. Our team has released over 1000 Section Questions in our GAMSAT Practice Package. Click below to view our practice package which contains 1000+ GAMSAT Section 1 questions.

What GAMSAT Score Do I Need? – Find Out Now!

So a very common question that is asked is ‘what GAMSAT score do I need?’

what gamsat score do i need
Well, the answer is…

It all depends.

Most Universities for medicine and dentistry admission take into account both GPA and GAMSAT when decided the students that will be invited for an interview. So there is no definite answer to the question ‘what GAMSAT score do I need?’

So basically the score depends on your GPA. With a very higher GPA, a student can potentially still get into medicine/dentistry with a low GAMSAT score. But again, this all depends on the University as different Universities will have different guidelines.

Our team has put together a Minimum GAMSAT Scores PDF which shows the minimum GAMSAT students have gained acceptance with in the previous year. These scores have been created from the PagingDr forums, where students have posted their scores and the respective university that has offered them a position.

These minimum GAMSAT scores can be used as a guide to see if you are likely to be accepted into medicine or dentistry with your GAMSAT + GPA combo.

Get your minimum GAMSAT Scores here:
==> Minimum GAMSAT Scores

Students should also prepare effectively for the MMI interviews.
The MMI stands for multiple mini interviews and is used to select for entry into Australian Medical Schools. After students have sat the GAMSAT, they then receive an offer to attend an interview before they are accepted into the program.

This interview method involves several stages where students are to respond to a certain scenario (testing ethics), practical tests, and interview questions. These certain scenarios are designed to test students on a range of different levels from communication skills all the way to empathy.

Students should search in youtube ‘MMI interview questions’ to get an idea of what the process is about.
